[November 2012] JRC Expert Workshop on Security and Scarcity of Raw Material: POLINARES findings on critical raw materials presented

Luis Tercero (Fraunhofer ISI) was a keynote speaker at the Expert Workshop on Security and Scarcity of Raw Materials organized by the JRC. The workshop, held in Ranco, Italy on the 13th and 14th of November, discussed the role of sustainability assessment in enhancing resource security. Luis' presentation - Criticality of mineral raw materials and sustainability assessment - was a Keynote talk in Session 3: Resource security in sustainability assessment.

[November 2012] NATO Roundtable on Energy Security: Results from POLINARES presented

Philip Andrews-Speed (POLINARES Scientific Coordinator) participated in a NATO Roundtable on Energy Security held in Brussels on 5th November. This roundtable formed part of a consultation and discussion process through which NATO is seeking to define its role in the field of energy security. Philip was one of a number of external (non-NATO) participants from think tanks and international organisations. His presentation - Sources of conflict over energy resources during the next 30 years - drew on results from the POLINARES project.


[September 2012] EU-US Expert Workshop on Raw Material Flows & Data: POLINARES findings on crtical raw materials presented

Luis Tercero (Fraunhofer ISI) was an invited speaker at the EU-US Expert Workshop on Raw Material Flows & Data, organized by DG Enterprise and Industry within the framework of the Transatlantic Economic Council (TEC). The workshop, held in Brussels on the 12th and 13th of September, provided a forum for comparing approaches to determining the criticality of raw materials and for exploring ways to collaborate, especially on data harmonization and availability.

Luis' presentation drew heavily on discussions within the POLINARES project on the issue of defining critical raw materials as laid out in deliverable D2.1 and related publications.

[September 2012] Transatlantic Dialogue on Energy, Water and Innovation: POLINARES key findings presented

Philip Andrews-Speed, POLINARES Scientific Coordinator, took part in the Transatlantic Dialogue on Energy, Water and Innovation: Visions of Sustainable Development workshop held on 11th September 2012 at the Woodrow Wilson Center in Washington DC. This was the last of a series of workshops initiated in 2010 intended to build understanding between the EU and the US on energy policy under the heading “EU-US Summit on Science, Technology, Innovation and Sustainable Economic Growth”. Philip presented some key findings from the first part of the POLINARES project which sought to identify the key challenges relating to access to oil, gas and minerals between now and the year 2040. The presentation was based on POLINARES deliverable D3.1.

[June 2012] Results of POLINARES study on raw materials criticality presented at two conferences

Philip Andrews-Speed (POLINARES Scientific Coordinator) presented the results of the POLINARES study on raw material criticality at two conferences run jointly by the Stiftung Wissenschaft und Politik (SWP) and the American Institute for Contemporary German Studies. Both conferences were entitled "Transatlantic Risk Governance: Handling Resource Risks". The first meeting was held in Brussels on 1st June 2012 and was hosted by the German Marshall Fund of the United States. The second meeting was held in SWPs Berlin office on 4th June.

[May 2012] SCOOP: POLINARES latest news on whether the EU's strategy to resource security needs to change

POLINARES contributed an article on "Energy and minerals: Does the EU's strategy to resource security need to change?" to the SCOOP News Alert Service. SCOOP is the EU initiative that supports the efforts of the research community to reach policy-makers and to facilitate the flow of information from the research community to other interested audiences, thereby supporting evidence-based policy making.

Daniele Benintendi, POLINARES Dissemination Work Package leader, presented an overview of the project's methodological approach at the EU-US Summit on Science, Technology and Sustainable Economic Growth Post Carbon Transitions, Visions and Challenges held on 29 September 2011 at the European Commission in Brussels.
